Chawan Benikase (Red fawn-spot) with brush strokes , Hosai XVI

Hosai XVI

This Chawan is based on an old Asahiyaki tea bowl called 'Oinami', which is listed in the Taisho Meikikan. I haven't had the chance to see it yet, but the previous generation Hosai often produced tea bowls in the shape of it.
The characteristic feature of Oinami is its shape and the thin brush strokes. The shape of the tea bowl is a little distorted, it is a mysterious circular tea bowl, only half distorted, circular on one side and square on the other. I can imagine Enshu's taste on it.
The Shichiho-mon, cloisonné pattern (consisting of circles and squares) is the family crest of the Kobori family and was Enshu’s favourite pattern. I feel the shape of this tea bowl reflects Enshu's taste. The name "Oinami" may come from the meaning of " following wave". I imagine it was named after the thin brush strokes, which look like waves.
Although my father made tea bowls of this shape, he did not copy the style of the thin brushwork. This may have been his consideration of keeping in mind that “Oinami” is the masterpieces. However, I was also attracted by the unique look of the thin brushstrokes, so I made a slightly different size to capture both the shape and the thin brushstrokes. At a glance, it looks very simple, but I think it has a subtle sense of artifice that is typical of Enshu's taste in tea ceremonies.
