Shōrokai Monthly Tea Ceremony – A Tradition in Uji

The Shōrokai Monthly Tea Ceremony is organized by Shōrokai, the supporter’s association of Asahiyaki, a historic pottery in Uji. Its roots trace back to 1951 (Shōwa 26), when a group of about 30 local tea enthusiasts established Rakutōkai at the pottery, a time when Japan was still recovering from the war. In 1965 (Shōwa 40), the group was renamed Shōrokai, and since then, they have hosted various events, including garden tea ceremonies, hands-on experience of making ceramics, and monthly tea ceremonies.

One of the unique aspects of the Shōrokai Monthly Tea Ceremony is its setting—Uji, a city deeply intertwined with Japan’s tea culture. Not only is Uji a historic tea production hub, but it is also a place of deep cultural significance. Moreover, the ceremony takes place at Uji’s renowned the pottery "ASAHIAYKI", adding another layer of authenticity and charm to the experience.
