Chawan / Kase ,Hosai XVI

Hosai XVI

The expression of this Kase tea bowl is extremely varied and interesting.

When turned over and viewed from the foot side, spotted patterns are streaked along the side of the foot like the Milky Way, and both sides extend in a pale yellow colour unique to Kase clay, called Usukihada colour.

The waist of Chawan is marked with finger marks from the glazing process, one on a single side and another two places on the opposite side. One of which is well accented with scarlet, while the other is bordered with a one-sided landscape of change. The inside has a rich gradation of colour throughout, with a concentration of mottled patterns on the bottom area, giving it an endless variety of highlights.

The shape has a distorted mouth rim like Kutsugata, a wooden shoe of aristocrats and nobles, but it is not a shape as typified by the so-called Oribe, but presents a soft distortion. After shaping it round with a potter's wheel, the clay is distorted by hand while it is still soft. Actually, it is difficult to achieve this balance.

If this balance cannot be well, Chawan will inevitably become deliberately contrived. I think the natural shape is beautiful, as if it had originally been that shape.
To achieve this, the beauty of the original shape before distortion, the timing of distortion and the degree of force are important, I feel this reaches the right balance.
