Chawan Benikase with gold and silver / Hosai XVI

Hosai XVI

Although I enjoy challenging myself with different styles, my ideas inevitably tend to circle back to familiar places. In that sense, this piece is quite unique for me.

For the past four years or so, I have been working with several companies on a project to create an AI design tool trained on Asahiyaki works. When I generate images using this tool, it produces designs that certainly feel like Asahiyaki, yet are unlike anything I would have conceived on my own. Many of the outputs aren’t particularly compelling, but every now and then one appears that makes me feel a strong urge to try making it.

From there, I let my imagination expand, and the piece I eventually create often ends up quite different from the original AI-generated image. Even so, it becomes a vessel that I likely would never have made without that initial spark.

This teabowl, with its distinctive application of gold and silver decoration, is one such piece.
