In the past, I was drawn to the vivid yet deeply saturated sky-blue tones of Gesshaku glaze, and I found myself fixated on pieces with particularly strong coloration. Recently, however, I’ve come to appreciate how broad and nuanced the beauty of Gesshaku glaze truly is. This tea bowl was created with the intention of expressing that wider range of its charm.
When the glaze is placed in an area of the kiln where the fire is especially intense and the temperature rises too high, its transparency increases and the blue color becomes lighter. As it begins to reveal the clay body underneath, the surface shifts to a soft grey with a hint of green. At the same time, an intricate network of very fine crazing appears, giving the piece an exceptionally attractive texture.
By allowing this unique surface expression to harmonize with the silver decoration applied to the lower part of the bowl, the result is a tea bowl that feels both contemporary and quietly rustic.
