"pine bamboo plum" was originally from China's Three Friends of Winter (Saikan no Sanyu) . Pine and bamboo do not fade in the cold, and plum blossoms in the cold. That is, "three species of plants that can withstand the cold of winter" would be good friends for us in cold season.
