Chawan Butterfly and Three Scales / Hanshi

Standard Item / Asahiyaki Pottery Collection

The chokudai (subject of the New Year's Imperial Poetry Contest) of 2025 is " 夢 Yume" (Dream).
In the Japanese tea ceremony, the Chwan is associated with the Chinese zodiac and the chokudai for the New Year.

The Butterfly Dream is a famous legend that is said to illustrate the ideas of the Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi. It is said that the butterfly represents the idea of “no action, no nature,” which values things as they are, transcending the boundaries of whether this world is a dream or reality. This butterfly has scale patterns on its wings. The butterfly may actually be the snake's dream form. Since ancient times, snakes have been believed to be messengers of the gods. In particular, seeing a white snake in a dream was considered a good omen.
At the beginning of the Year of the Snake, we hope you will use this teacup with thoughts of the dream inside.
