The chokudai (subject of the New Year's Imperial Poetry Contest) of 2024 is " 和 wa" (harmony).
In the Japanese tea ceremony, the Chwan is associated with the Chinese zodiac and the chokudai for the New Year.
There is a famous temple called Byodoin in our hometown. In Byodoin, there is a Houou-do "Phoenix Hall", which enshrines a phoenix.
On the roof of the houou-do are golden phoenix statues. Along with them are dragon head tiles. Houou-do is said to be guarded by a dragon and a phoenix together.The dragon represents yang and the phoenix represents yin. The dragon and the phoenix harmonize and cooperate with yin and yang. This is the reason Byodoin has been protected for so many years.
The chokudai " 和 Wa " means cooperation or collaboration. This chawan combines the Chinese zodiac and the chokudai.
