Matsubayashi Hosai XVI
In 2016, he succeeded to Hosai XVI, a practitioner of the 400-years old Asahiyaki pottery. Under his father's guidance, he learned the art of pottery and became a fully-fledged potter at the age of twenty-five.
He mainly produced tea ceramics for use during tea ceremonies and exhibited his works throughout all of Japan. He also spread the knowledge of the Japanese tea culture among foreigners. He had a exhibition and tea ceremony in Guimet Museum in Paris.
He produced his works using the traditional Asahiyaki techniques and methods. They epitomized a world view combining the traditional tea ceremony aesthetics and modern-day sensibilities.
